How to solve Time and Work Questions in CAT Exam

 Preparing to take a competitive exam can be a difficult task in and of itself. If that exam is the most difficult in the country, it will only increase the pressure on you. The CAT is the most difficult exam for admission to the top management colleges in India. This exam requires a systematic, holistic approach. This exam covers many topics and sections. The time and work concepts are another part of the exam that may seem easy but is quite difficult. This concept is often asked in competitive exams.

Time refers to the time that any activity or work takes place. A specific type of task or activity is called work.

Q-1.  There is a water leak in the tank's bottom. The leak will cause the tank to fill up in eight hours. When the tank is full, a tap is opened to let water in. The tank then dries out in 12 hours. How big is the tank?

(b) 36 Litres

(c) 144 Litres

(d) Uncertain

ExplanationThe tap will fill the tank at 6 liters an hour, which is equal to 144 liters in 24 hours. The tank's capacity is therefore 144 liters. The answer is (c).

Q-2. Q-2. A man can complete the same task in one day and a woman in two days. A child can complete one-third of the work in a single day compared to a woman. A company can hire men, women, and children in a ratio of 6 to 5: 2, and pay them Rs. If the wage is proportional to the work done, how much should a child earn each day?

 (a) Rs 14

(b) Rs 5

(c) Rs 20

(d) Rs 7

ExplanationThis is Rs.756 for men and Rs.42 for children. For women, it is Rs. 315. Six children will receive Rs 42 per day.

Thus, the daily wage for a child is equal to 42/6 = Rs7This is why option (d), is the right answer.


Let's take another example. A pit must be dug in ten days. A person can dig a pit in 10 days. In one day, the same individual can do 1/10th. This is the basic approach that's used to solve most of the time-related questions for CAT.
