1. Placements
a. Figures of Inflated Placements
CTCs of 25 lac does not necessarily mean that the candidate will earn this amount. The 25 lac package would have approximately 15 lac as the fixed element. 3 lac would be for the joining bonus. 2 lac would be for the maximum bonus. 5 lac will be for stock options that will vest later. Even if you earn 20 lac, if you receive the full bonus, the 3 lac deduction from your CTC will occur in the second year. For 80-90% of cases, stock options are ignored!
b. Mean Salaries -Even though they are widely reported, the mean salaries do not provide a complete picture of the current state of affairs. The law of averages states that for every 20 people earning a salary of $30 lac, many others earn 10-12 lac. It is not always a happy ending for everyone during the placement season. This is something that no one considers.
c. Wrong field many people get high-paying jobs, but not in the industry they want. A CFA Level 2 certified person got a marketing and sales internship. There is a mismatch.
2.Cut-throat competition Your peers will beat you if you don't play up your A-game. Your grade can be changed by a mere 1-2 marks. Many of your colleagues are past toppers. You can have a serious backlog if you take a break for a few days.
3. Fake CV Points
25 percent of CVs are likely to be fake. This is where exaggeration is key. If he were Vice-president for a fest that is attended by 1000 people, then it will be labeled "Managed India’s largest management fest with a footfall above 10,000+ people". Sometimes I am unsure which is more fake: Salman Khan's charity work or the CV of an IIM student.
4. Conceptual understanding? Please tell me what you think is most important for the exam.
There are eight subjects per semester. There are two exams each semester - the Mid-terms or End-terms. In essence, there are six exams and 24 subjects that you need to know - all packed into nine months, with the main focus on placements. How can you expect students to LEARN the subject in such a setting? Many students are happy just to look at past papers and faculty PowerPoints. It is difficult to learn subjects in this environment. Instead, it is important to manage stress and time effectively.
5. Quality of Professors
You will be shocked at the pathetic qualities of teachers! There are many types of teachers. One is a sadistic teacher who waits for you to fiss up. Another one is a professor that knows nothing outside the book. I have a special dislike for those who finish class late. You are a MANAGEMENT teacher. Don't you know how you can manage your time? Despite being highly qualified and PhD-educated, teachers have little to no connection with students. This is only one side of the story. Talking to these professors will help you gain a deeper understanding of the subject.
6. Nobody knows how to manage a GD
You will be amazed at the mediocrity displayed by summer placements if you attend a GD. One person will never open his mouth in a group of 10 people, while two people will raise their voices constantly and one person will make irrelevant points. It's a fish market.
7. Copying is the widespread telephone
Chits. Writing about body parts. Deciding when to meet in the bathroom. Anything is acceptable as long as it improves the grade. Except for a few, everyone indulges. It is a religion.
8. It can be difficult to manage a friendship or relationship over long distances. It is not an easy task.
P.S. P.S. - I am not saying that joining an IIM is a bad decision. It's one of the best decisions you can make. These are not the only negative aspects. These are just the negative aspects.
