It's true, you have to admit that two years in a Bschool is a long time. If you are studying at ISB, Great Lakes, etc., it will be for one year. It will be one of your most memorable academic experiences. Your B-school experience will be something you'll remember for the rest of your life.
There will be moments during your journey when you'll go "Woah!" This is not what was expected. That's okay. While we may have rosy visions of our Bschool experiences in our heads, sometimes the reality is quite different. We thought it would be fun to dispel some myths you may have about what you can expect at a school like B-school.
1) Expectation: "I will find people from diverse backgrounds in my batch."
Reality The majority of people who work at Infosys/TCS/Wipro are Engineers.
Everybody expects to meet cool, diverse people at B schools. It is common to want to meet people who have studied Medicine, Commerce, Aviation, Arts, and Medicine. However, once you get into a B-school you realize that 80% of people are *WAIT FOR IT* engineers. You might be lucky to find some diversity amongst the engineers such as Mechanical or Civil. However, most will be from IT and Computer Science branches.
2)Expectation: "The academic rigor of a Bschool won't even allow me to sleep.
Reality It all comes down to your willingness to work hard and what you can do.
While B-schools try to provide a rigorous curriculum for students, they won't force you to learn (most of all) like a ten-year-old child. The faculty understands that you are a mature adult and should be treated accordingly. They won't try to spoonfeed you academics-related stuff. You would be able to make the most of your time and money if you were to share it with them.
3) Expectation:High CGPA = Best Placements
RealityHigh CGPA + A lot More + A little Luck = (Possibly), The Best Placement
Many believe that placements will be arranged if you are in the top 10-15% of students in your batch. This is false. While CGPA's should be maintained at a high level, placements depend on other factors such as your industry knowledge, work experiences, communication skills, and personality traits (like flexibility and social skills). Even if your CGPA is in order, you still need that extra bit of luck to get the placement of your dreams.
4)Expectations: "A poor summer placement will hurt my chances of getting a great final placement."
RealityRefer to point (3).
Many students worry about interning at Fortune 500 companies as they believe that the final placements will only judge them on their internships. Internships are not the only thing job recruiters consider. While internships with top brands can be great if you can get them, they are not for everyone. Fear not! Interning in a small or start-up business can be a great way to learn.
5)Expectation: I just need to focus on the subject of my interest (like Marketing/HR/Operations/Finance)
RealityWhile you might be able to specialize in one area, you still need to learn all aspects of the subject.
If you might be an Engineer who gets scared at the sight of Balance Sheets and has already decided to be the next Marketing/HR/Operations Guru, then please hold on and hear this. MBA education is about developing managers who can think holistically. If you are chosen to become the Marketing Manager at Romeo Gym across the street, you must consider the impact on your company's bottom line (read Profits) before you make any decisions. Once you're in school, you should learn everything you can, and then focus on one thing.
6)Expectation: "My life will be all the giddy-dory after I graduate from school."
Reality"The first two years, at the most, will be difficult."
This is especially true of fresh MBAs. Many people believe that a high-quality B-school will lead to a happy and successful life. Again, this is far from the truth. It will be a miserable two-year experience in your first job. It doesn't matter if you choose to work in IT, FMCG, or Banking, it will be difficult to adapt to the reality of working in the real world.
Fear not! If you can survive the first two years under extreme pressure, you will emerge as a sparkling diamond or wilted coke. Most importantly, diamonds.
